Contents:

The Old Spain

This section of the course will focus on Spanish historical roots analyzing and studying its Prehistory and the Old History.

Students will study the Iberic Peninsule in the Prehistoric Period from the first settlers to the agricultural and metallurgic revolution. Another area of study will include the period that goes from the Preroman Iberia to the Roman Spain, describing the most important aspects of the Romanization of Spain.

This section will end with the study of the Fall of the Roman Empire and the Visigothic Period.

The Iberic Peninsule in the Middle Ages: Al-Andalus

In this section, students will concentrate on the History of the Peninsule from the Muslim Invasion in 711 to the crisis of the Late Middle Ages.

The period from 711, the date of the Muslim invasion of Spain until the capitulation of the Kingdom of Granada in 1492, is one of the most important periods in Spanish History. Many behaviours, traditional crafts and art influences have their roots in this period.

This section of the course will focus on the characteristics and history of the Hispanic-Muslim world, focusing on the different periods dating from the Muslim invasion of Granada to the loss of the Kingdom. A special emphasis will be placed on the artistic diversity that this period reflects. This section will end with the analysis of the crisis of Aragon and Castilla Kingdom.

Modern Period

From the Catholic Monarchs to the dawn of the War for Independence in 1808, Spain had considerable influence in Europe. In the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, Spain was the largest imperial power on the continent.

Students will concentrate on Spain’s political, economic and territorial dominance in the early part of the period, and her eventual declining power. Students will also compare the religious and civil art produced at the time, learning about its characteristics that demonstrate the thought and character of the Spanish people.

Spain in the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries

This period of Spanish History is marked by economic, social and political crisis that led to a transformation of Spain from the old regime to recent times.
The study of contemporary history clearly demonstrates the inefficiency and burdens of traditional bureaucracy and the changes that have taken place to make Spain the country it is today.
The political changes that occurred in this period are, in large part, those which define the typical romantic image of Spain and Spaniards today.
